Mina Gorji
hedge song
I am standing beside the hedge
listening to its song:
so many generations
calling through the leaves.
Further away, the Roman road
sends out its hum,
and closer by, the wind replies
a lower note. Perhaps
it hears me too,
this hedge, my heart song –
pitched beyond
my own ears’ frequency,
sounding
an answer –
not quite
an echo.
MINA GORJI was born in Iran and lives in Cambridge. Her debut collection, Art of Escape, was published by Carcanet in 2020, and was a Telegraph ‘Book of the Month’. Her poems have appeared in Poetry Review and the Forward Book of Poetry amongst others.
